What Do Cables Do?

A garage door cable is similar to what’s often called “aircraft cable.” It’s made of many strands of stainless-steel wire that are twisted together but remain pliable. Cables carry all of the weight and tension to raise and lower the door.

Think of how many times your garage door opens and closes each week. Over time, all that up and down motion will wear on the cables, and they’re an integral part of your garage door system. How do you know when it’s time to replace them? Our experts have put together some telltale signs to watch for:

See visible issues? If you do a visual inspection of the cables and see visible signs of rust, corrosion, fraying or excess wear, that’s a sign that you should get your cable replaced before it fails. Another telltale sign is the spiral effect, where a strand looks like it has “bumped out” from the group.

Notice slack when the door is open? When the door is in the open position, the cables should stay tight between the drum and the bottom of the door. If there is any slack on one or both cables, it could mean that the cables have stretched or that the spring is wearing.

Garage door won’t open? If you press the button on your garage door opener and it doesn’t open, it could be a number of things, but it may be a sign that your cable has broken.
